Areas of Focus

At What If AI, we believe the future of artificial intelligence begins with the right questions.

Our work is guided by a simple yet profound structure:

  • What If: Imagining the possibilities.

  • What Now: Confronting the challenges of today.

  • What Then: Preparing for the futures we aim to build.

Each question represents a lens through which we explore AI governance, ethics, and policy. This approach allows us to address immediate concerns while envisioning transformative opportunities for a more equitable and accountable future.

About the Founder

What If AI was created to ask sharper, more inclusive questions about how artificial intelligence is shaping the world — and to imagine how it could be reshaped with intention. It exists to explore the intersection of AI, governance, and global systems, especially where legal frameworks fall short or fail to protect. The platform challenges narrow conversations by centering equity, power, and accountability — not as afterthoughts, but as starting points for what responsible AI must look like.

The project was founded by Maryama Elmi, a lawyer and AI governance researcher with experience in privacy law, global tech policy, and responsible innovation. After navigating legal frameworks, working on international AI initiatives, and advising on ethical challenges in emerging tech, she launched What If AI to bridge a gap — between expert spaces and public ones, between legal systems and lived realities. She believes good governance starts with better questions, and that imagining a more just AI future is a task worth taking seriously.
